Audience Research into taste and behaviour - Sophie
Film Audiences - Preferences and Behaviours
By creating a survey using 'SurveyMonkey', it helped me depict the range of audiences which occur and how each differ. The questions asked were based around Cinema, and which kind of people like going to the cinema and why. I posted the link to my survey on a range of social media platforms in order to reach a wider audience. Below you can see the age demographics reached which therefore coincide with some of the answers given.
Q1)WHAT WAS THE LAST FILM YOU SAW AT THE CINEMA?
From this pie chart above you can see that the most common film seen last at the cinema by the audience whom answered this survey was 'Trainspotting : T2'. This is a british black comedy and a sequel to the original 'Trainspotting' released in 1996. The reason for this being popular may have been due to the age range of the people asked. As many were between the ages of 18-25, they are old enough to watch the film and may have been fans of the original and therefore wanted to see 'T2' when first released, rather than having to wait later to find it online. 'Split' was also a common film last seen in the cinema with 7 people. This may have been due to the fact that the trailer was shown on many social media platforms including twitter, Facebook and instagram - making it in the eye of youths on a daily basis. 'Rush' (released in 2013), and 'Kingsman : secret service' (released 2014), aren't recently distributed films in the cinema; proving that the people who saw these last obviously do not attend the cinema often as they may prefer to watch at home online.
Q2)HOW OFTEN DO YOU GO TO THE CINEMA?
Here the most common answer regarding how often the people asked attend the cinema, was once every month, closely followed by once every 2-3 months. This may also be due to the age range as it is a social activity that youths and young adults enjoy on a regular basis. However, going to the cinema can be quite expensive which correlates to why only 2 out of 28 people asked go on average, once a week.
Q3)HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU VISIT THE CINEMA IN A YEAR?
As you can see the majority of people asked (14 out of 28), visit the cinema 10 to 15 times on average. This may be due to the time of year films are released, for example if someone likes thrillers, there might be 3 films coming out near halloween so they might attend the cinema 3 times in one month but not at a consistent rate. A very minimal amount of people (2) visit the cinema under 5 times a year, and the same for over 15 times a year. This is probably due to the fact that there probably isn't enough films that someone wants to see in order for them to go possibly more than once a month on average.
Q4)DO YOU TEND TO GO TO THE CINEMA ANY PARTICULAR DAY OF THE WEEK?
From this chart we can see that the results were very similar for the days of Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Friday and Saturday are known to be the relaxing days where the kids are off school and the adults are off work for the weekend, meaning its a popular time of the week to go out especially in the evenings. As for Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Vue cinema have exclusive offers. They used to have an orange wednesdays deal for 2for1 tickets; this how now changed into becoming a Meerkat movie member. These exclusive deals are hosted by the cinema to allow their audience money off, and the cinema will gain customers mid week when they usually wouldn't. A minimal amount of 3 people said they attend usually on a Thursday and 1 person said they attend on a Sunday.
Q5)WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE GENRE OF FILM?
This pie chart shows the genres picked by the audience who took the survey. You can see that the most preferred genre is Horror/Thriller; this may be due to the age range as the majority of people who took this survey were young adults or youths who enjoy the adrenaline of being scared or frightened. Action/Drama is quite a universal genre for anyone aged 13 and above resulting into why it was the second most popular choice. A minimal amount of people chose animation and genres such as comedy were not chosen by the audience.
Q6)HOW DO YOU HEAR ABOUT NEW FILMS? (E.G : TRAILERS, TEXTS, POSTERS, ADVERTISING ON BUSES, INTERNET ADVERTISING, THROUGH MAGAZINES, WORD OF MOUTH ETC)
Here you can see that for the audience who took part in this survey, a result of 8 people most frequently hear about films through the use of social media including twitter, Facebook and instagram. This is due to the age range who took part as youths and young adults are primarily on their phones a lot more than any other generation. An equal amount of people (6) see trailers on tv as much as public posters. Public posters and billboards are still a huge part of the marketing campaign and have been extremely effective for a number of years as they appeal to a wide age demographic.
Q7)WHEN YOU GO TO THE CINEMA, DO YOU BUY REFRESHMENTS? WHAT DO YOU BUY?
The majority of people who buy refreshments at the cinema choose popcorn. This emphasises the fact that going to the cinema has some kind of tradition as it has always been a common feature to have popcorn at the cinema. This may be an incentive to want to go to the cinema instead of watching something online; it adds to the whole atmosphere of watching the film. 5 people have stated they do not buy any refreshments whilst at the cinema, this may be due to the fact that the prices have increased dramatically of the past years and many have found it cheaper to eat in a restaurant before of after, instead of buying food at the cinema.
Q8)ARE YOU PERSUADED TO SEE MOVIES BECAUSE THEY FEATURE PARTICULAR FILMS STARS? IF SO, WHO?
In this survey a result of 11 out of 28 people stated that they are more likely to see a film is a specific actor or actress is featured in it but have not specified who. This proves that the casting for the film can have a huge dependence on the marketing of the film and the income the film may produce. 6 people have said they are more persuaded to see a film if Leonardo DiCaprio is starring - this is likely due to the fact that he is a well regarded actor and many people know his talent and the well acclaimed films he has worked on.
Q9)DO YOU PREFER TO WATCH HOLLYWOOD MOVIES AT THE CINEMA, OR FILMS FROM ELSEWHERE (LIKE BRITISH FILMS OR BOLLYWOOD FILMS)?
Here you can see that the majority of the people asked enjoy watching Hollywood films at the cinema. This may be due to the fact that they are the most common films to be shown at the cinema as they are mainstream and not independent, this makes them a familiar thing for the audience to see so they know what to expect. If someone has maybe never seen an independent film before, they might not want to pay to see one in the cinema as they are not sure on the quality of the film.
Q10)HOW MANY MOVIES HAVE YOU SEEN AT THE CINEMA IN 3D?
Q11)ARE YOU MORE OR LESS INTERESTED IN MOVIES IF THEY ARE 3D?
Q12)WHATS BETTER - HOME CINEMA OR THE CINEMA?
Q13)DID YOU SEE YOUR FAVOURITE FILM OF ALL TIME AT THE CINEMA?
Q14)HAVE YOU EVER BOUGHT A DVD OF A FILM YOU HAVE SEEN AT THE CINEMA?
Q15)DO YOU WATCH FILMS ONLINE? AND DO YOU PAY FOR ONLINE FILMS?
Q16)WITH HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU USUALLY VISIT THE CINEMA?

Audience research into taste and behaviour
To research into audience and their preference in cinema, I have created a survey on SurveyMonkey.com.
This will enable me to see how different audiences with different ages and backgrounds engage with films at the cinema.
All are American films, with ''Jack Reacher: never go back'' being mentioned the most. This is a thriller starring Tom Cruise so it would be a big budget block buster.
From this it seems the survey takers mostly go into cinema to watch big blockbuster no matter age or gender.
Q2) How often do you go to the cinema?
The majority answer here is at least once a month, no matter the age or gender group.
Q3) How many times do you visit cinema in a year?
4) Do you tend to go cinema on any particular day of the week?
Here, Saturday seems to be the most popular option to go to the cinema. This may effect the dates the cinemas release films to receive maximum profits.
Q5) What is your favourite genre of film?
The most popular genre of this sample is action. This tells me that it must be that this genre is quite popular in the UK, which would reflect on the success of action films.
Q6) How do you hear about films?
Trailers are the most common form of finding out about a film. This means that during the marketing stage, distribution companies focus a lot on producing and marketing trailers of films.
Q7) When you go to the cinema do you buy refreshments? If so, what do you buy?
This is significant because one of the main ways cinemas make their money is through these types of services. The money from the tickets goes to the production company.
